Puerto del Carmen Diving

Puerto del Carmen, a town in Lanzarote Island in the Canary Islands is the kind of destination which allows divers to experience diving within another world, a volcanic world, with unique rock formations, a high abundance of colourful marine species and even a blue hole. 

 

Diving in Puerto del Carmen

Puerto del Carmen is a resort town located on the south east coast of the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands of Spain. Playa Chica and Playa Grande are the main spots to access most of the 10 dive sites off the coast of Puerto del Carmen. There are multiple dive centres and dive resorts which will take divers either from shore, or by boat, to the best dive sites in the area including a Blue Hole, thrilling wall dives and exciting caves and caverns paired with a variety of marine species. 

Best time to dive

The diving season in Puerto del Carmen is year round due to warm temperatures throughout the year; between 17 and 26 degrees Celsius. Water temperatures range between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius with incredible visibility throughout the year between 10 and 35 metres. The best diving months are between April and October for the best overall conditions. 

Types of diving

The main feature of the diving here is the interesting and varied volcanic underwater topography. Every dive site has some interesting rock formations to excite the divers including steep walls, swim throughs, caverns, caves, archways, plateaus, shallow reefs and overhangs. There is even a Blue Hole which drops off into the abyss. There are shore dives and boat dives, depending on the dive site. 

What to see

There is a large variety of marine species which live amongst these rock formations, in these nutrient rich waters such as Nudibranchs, Shrimps and different species of Rays. Among the rocks also live some flourishing corals including Orange Corals and colourful Anemones. Some of the larger fish species which roam these waters include Groupers, Tuna, Barracuda and Amberjacks. There is also a chance to spot Angel Sharks here. 

Best places to dive

The Blue Hole is the famous dive site here, it starts with a garden filled with eels which leads to a swim through which is the gateway to the blue abyss that is the Blue Hole. 

Cathedral is a shore dive which features a cavern for divers to swim through, with a stunning archway, schools of fish inside the cave and a ‘bubble garden’ where divers can swim through their exhaled bubbles. 

Richies Place is the dive site which features the steepest walls and drop offs for a thrilling dive.
