Playa del Ingles Diving

Playa del Ingles is home to one of Gran Canaria’s most visited beaches with several dive centres on hand to help you explore the volcanic rock formations, caverns, and reefs found beneath the waves. Expect eagle rays, angel sharks, and schooling barracuda.

 

Diving in Playa del Ingles

Playa del Ingles is a purpose-built resort located to the south of Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. The area is home to wide sandy beaches and vibrant nightlife as well as a multitude of incredible dive sites below the water. With dramatic volcanic landscapes and a spectacular variety of marine life including giant stingrays and angel shark, divers will be in awe as soon as they descend.

Scuba diving in Playa del Ingles is possible from dive centres in the area which explore most of the dive locations on the island including the most renowned dive site in Gran Canaria, El Cabron Marine Reserve.

Best time to dive

Bathed by the Gulf Stream, the water temperature of Gran Canaria is regulated, keeping it between 17℃-18℃ in winter and around 23℃ in the summer. The sun in Gran Canaria shines all-year-round and the winters are mild. Visibility in the Canary Islands if often more than 30-metres, making Playa del Ingles diving accessible throughout the year - just make sure to dress accordingly for the season!

Types of diving

Located nearby to Playa del Ingles, divers can venture into Mogan Caves where caverns can be explored at your own leisure or visit the two wrecks of the Mogan Wrecks, lying 19-metres below the surface. In northeast Gran Canaria, La Catedral provides the opportunity to dive deep and admire incredible volcanic rock formations. Dive courses usually take place in Amadores Bay, only ten minutes from the heart of Playa del Ingles.

What to see

While completing dive courses in Amadores Bay, divers will swim among a wide variety of tropical fish while octopus’ hide under rocks. In caverns, stingrays can be spotted resting on the sandy seabed and sea turtles glide up to the water’s surface. The flat-bodied angel shark is a common resident of Gran Canaria as well as schooling barracuda and groupers. While admiring the natural volcanic reefs of the area, octopus, starfish, nudibranch, eagle rays, and cuttlefish can be discovered.

Best places to dive

Voted as one of the top 10 dive sites in Europe, El Cabron Marine Reserve has several routes that are suitable for divers of all levels. The site has dramatic volcanic rock formations, arches, caves, and deep blue water - a dive site you will not want to miss!

Based in the north of Gran Canaria, the Arona Wreck sits 35-metres deep and is the perfect refuge for moray eel, eagle rays and large schools of barracuda. Near to Playa del Ingles, the Artificial Reef dive spot provides a home for several species including, octopus, moray eel and cuttlefish.
