Lisbon Region Diving

Lisbon is not only the capital of Portugal, but it is this magnificent country's cultural epicenter and full of natural and historical beauty. Although scuba diving in the Lisbon Region is not the first thing that comes to mind when visiting here, it is actually home to Portugal's diving mecca, Sesimbra, where you can explore everything from shipwrecks and deep rocky reefs to underwater caves.

As the cultural epicenter and capital of Portugal, Lisbon exudes natural and historical beauty. Although scuba diving in Lisbon is not the first thing that comes to mind when visiting this amazing city, it is the perfect place to base yourself for exploring everything found in these Atlantic waters, from historic shipwrecks and deep rocky reefs to underwater caves.

Setubal

Setúbal, Portugal, is located just east of Sesimbra, the most popular area for diving in the Lisbon Region. The coastline of this historic fishing village is full of beautiful beaches where the mountains meet the sea. Diving in Setúbal is available to all diver levels with many exciting reefs to explore.

 

Diving in the Lisbon Region

Portugal's rich history of maritime activity is evident in the waters surrounding the capital region of Lisbon. This area now hosts numerous fantastic shipwrecks to explore, making scuba diving in the Lisbon Region a wreck diver's dream.

This area of the Atlantic Ocean is often protected from large swells and offers a unique underwater landscape for divers of all levels to explore. You can find deep rocky reefs, incredible wall dives, and exciting underwater caves. There are also plenty of shallow dive sites even suitable for snorkelers.

Lisbon Region diving is most popular in Sesimbra, where you can find most of the Lisbon area dive centers. They offer diving in the Lisbon Region year round; however, diving is best here from April to October when the water and air temperatures are warmest.

Best places to dive

Arrábida National Park - Arrábida National Park is the first marine park established in continental Portugal and one of the most popular dive areas in this region. Come explore the beautiful sheer underwater cliffs that make this site famous.

Sesimbra - The municipality of Sesimbra lies just south of Lisbon and is home to most Lisbon Region dive centers. Numerous dive sites sit just offshore here, including the famous Arrábida National Park and several great wreck dives.

Cascais - This quieter region of Lisbon offers excellent diving with amazing views of the abundant, colorful gorgonians growing here.

Fonte de Telha - Sitting just offshore from this long stretch of beautiful beach are a handful of excellent dive sites. Due to its exposure to the open ocean, Fonte de Telha offers a chance to spot sunfish (mola mola), dolphins, and rays.

River Gurara Proa Wreck - Diving in the Lisbon Region is not complete without exploring this famous wreck. This Nigerian cargo ship sank during a storm in 1989 and is now host to a rich array of marine life.
