Lošinj Diving

Mali Losinj

One of the main attractions of diving at Mali Lošinj in Croatia is the Lošinj Historical Underwater Park which is an underwater historical museum. However, aside from that unique experience divers can also enjoy nature; an abundance of marine life, thrilling rock formations and so much more. 

 

Diving in Losinj

Lošinj is an island of Croatia, which lies in the North Adriatic Sea. It is well known due to its luscious greenery and spectacular collection of bays. The two main cities that visitors stay in are Mali Lošinj and Veli Lošinj and this is also where the dive centres are located. These dive centres offer dive courses and guided dives for certified divers to go and visit the many dive sites here. One of the main spectacles here includes the Lošinj Historical Underwater Park, the many caves, walls and other rock formations, and the high density of marine life. The dive sites have many different depths so divers of all levels can visit them. 

Best time to dive

Diving in Croatia and in the Adriatic Sea is possible year round. The waters, however, are the warmest in the summer between June and September, in these months, the waters are also the calmest. In the winter, the water temperatures range between 15 and 19 degrees Celsius, while in the summer they go up to 25 degrees Celsius. The visibility is above average, between 10 and 30 metres, leaning mostly towards 30 metres.

Types of diving

There is an array of diving possibilities in the waters around Lošinj Island. Divers can choose to visit the local dive centres and see what dive options are available. One of the main attractions here is the Lošinj Historical Underwater Park where divers can admire some historical artefacts and statues. The natural underwater world is also fantastic here, with a great selection of rock formations such as caves and walls, there are shallow dive sites for dive courses and to spot macro life, and flourishing marine life all over the place. Night dives are also popular here. 

What to see

One of the highlights of diving in Croatia is the high density of marine life which are lit up by the sun penetrating the clear waters. The marine flora includes species such as Gorgonians, Soft Corals, Hard Corals, Sea Fans, Sea Sponges and Anemones. The species inhabiting these healthy reefs including colourful Nudibranchs, Lobsters, Moray Eels, Octopus and more. Some of the fish which fill these waters include Jacks, Black Damselfish, Bream, Rainbow Wrasse and Sardines. This may not be the place for large species, but it is the place for many species. 

Best places to dive

Lošinj Historical Underwater Park is an underwater museum which holds 11 artefacts at depths between 5 and 15 metres. Some of the artefacts are cannons, ancient anchors and amphorae, and an ancient athlete statue, and that is just to name a few. Diving here is a unique experience.

Krivica is a fantastic wall dive which divers can visit both during the day and at night to spot the many species of marine life located in the cracks and crevices.

Tihany is a cargo ship which sank in 1912 and is a 60 metre long vessel which lies at 33 metres. It is possible to penetrate the wreck and check out the collection of ceramics that was onboard.
